He always feared the reaction of his mother if he asked her why she hates him Ed’s progression in the book is seen in the way that he deals with Father O'Reilly’s problem. Having learnt to act independently he now faces the problem inherent in leadership. Ed has gained self confidence whilst dealing with other challenges. He is now capable of helping Father O’Reilly, with his problems to converse with his brother. Ed also attempts to lure people to come to the church and make a connection with God. He even goes to the effort of getting in trouble himself to help the priest get some people go to the church, by sray painting at 3am in the morning.
