The perfection of my wound left nothing to contemplate in Gloucester’s mind! Why would a man risk killing himself? Power I say, it all ends with power. From that point on it was clear it would be easy to take my father’s land but when an opportunity for more control falls in my lap, I’m going to take it. The quarrel between Lear and his daughters had left a place for me to squeeze my foot in so I could make myself a part of this royal mess as well. I thought to myself: “How can I use this?”, and it suddenly came to me that I could immediately take my father’s title by betraying him. I never understood why he thought he had to protect Lear, what had he ever done for us? The answer is nothing, which is what made turning him in so easy. I told Cornwall that my father wishes to defend Lear. An enraged Cornwall fell right into my hands, giving me my father’s title as he left, running towards Lear. After that it was only a matter of time before I could rise up higher and overtake Cornwall, since he trusted me. Since the moment that I left my home and travelled to that of Goneril’s, the lady has been hanging off of my every word, can I blame her, since I am a true man not like the pathetic Albany? When she gave me her favour I cannot say I was surprised but I knew that I would have reinforcement should I ever want to take Albany’s land from him.
