Labour market flexibility does apply to Australian labour markets through many forms; Wage flexibility, Procedural Flexibility Functional flexibility, External Numerical flexibility and Internal Numerical flexibility. ... The restructuring of the Australian labour market, which began in the early 1980’s, was caused by a need for less ‘rigid’ workplace arrangements and a greater need for flexibility with in the workplace. The breakdown of these rigid workplace agreements within Australia enabled a labour market reform which was based on increasing the labour market flexibility through these five main forms. ... It is also the opportunity to adjust any wage structures differences that may be between and within occupations, industries and age groups. ...
Norris (1993) discussed this notion of wage determination and flexibility within Australia, which came about in the late 1980’s to early 1990’s with the introduction of the National Wage Case. ... Improving labour flexibility was also necessary in the functional sense. The need to create workplace environments in which the encouragement of on the job training, apprentice traineeships, and seniority benefits allowed employees opportunity to movement within the industry, in the effort to create a more multi-skilled worker, which would ultimately take on greater responsibility of which fell under his job role.
