...ething harsh like the holocaust, happens in a person life, it's better to move on and forget. What I like about this book is that Gerda moves on but she never forgets. Though the book, Mrs. Klein told every detail of the experience and how it relates to her life. When Gerda wanted to relay the harsh weather conditions of the march she stated that she saw a girl "break off her toes like brittle wood" When she just could have stated that it was extremely cold. Mrs. Klein does this from time to time regardless of how harsh or emotionally moving it may be. When Mrs. Klein explains on page 183 how the Hungarian girls stole shoes off those that were sleep to survive because they had none, soon afterward expressing her deep gratitude to her father for making her wear those boots on a sunny day (182). She did this again to appreal to the emotional side with a heart touching comparison to how she could feel about her experience and how she does feel with the letter from Erika. That letter showed how Gerda could change her state of mind to hate, much like Erika (70). What she did was…….. …………………..eye pits burned feverishly". (105) She completely described the prisoners exactly how she might have seen them, simple but with a poetic since to it. While describing her experience she also inspired me with her personal strength and determination. When separated from her parents Mrs. Klein proclaimed, "now I have to live"…"because I am alone and nothing can hurt me anymore". (95) Showed her strong will to survive.
