Reservations: education friendly? Not just yet.

...an friend who lives on the reservation I have found out that although a lot of parents care there are many who still don’t care if their child goes to school or are too intoxicated to care. The second step to a good education is actually getting a good schooling. Though the education system on the reservation is improving it is still poor in many of the heavily Native American populated areas. Through the friend I talked to early he has told me that he has seen where a native family has moved into their predominantly Caucasian area around Isabel, on the Cheyenne River Reservation, from another mostly Native American populated area. Within a few days the children of that family had fallen behind and had gotten bad grades in their classes. Then the family moved back to where they came from and their children who were pulling bad grades in Isabel started to get good grades again. He has also told me that this happens a lot usually about 5 or 6 times a school year. On an average a predominantly Native American school teaches the students a year behind what a predominantly Caucasian school would teach their students. The third and most essential part of a good education is the students actually wanting to learn the material that is taught to them. If the Parents of These Native American families don’t care if their children go to school what is stopping the children from not wanting to go to school them selves? The answer is nothing.
