...when the child has all the media to his disposal right in his bedroom and the children can get too attached to them. The end result can be lack of sleep which can affect the child’s attention in class and learning. The grades can be reduced drastically as the child is now focused on the media and not on school work. I totally agree that a child’s time should be supervised and in order to supervise that time these multimedia should not be placed in the child’s bedroom because of the adverse effect it can have upon the child. Take for instance the Cullumbine shootings. Those boys were not supervised and the parents did not know what was going on in there very own house because the boys had the free access to the medias in their room or private area. If the parents were supervising then they could have guided the boys thinking to something positive. Also consider internet chat where children are taken advantage of when they physically meet the person, even to the extend that they are kidnapped and killed. It is noted in the article that some parents did not mind that that their boys have these media in their room as they sited that the child had gotten so good at it that they are impressed and that this can help the child obtain a good job in the future. Another states that they do not mind as long as the child’s grades are up and have not fallen. Another excuse is that the child is on the internet doing homework or researching assignments for the school paper and radio station than to be chatting up friends. Other parents are impressed, proud and marvels at the fact that their child can multitask these media as they themselves cannot do it, which would give the impression that it is ok for the child to have it without seeing the other side to it.
