Then, cliché as it seems, Elaine would then realize that her feelings were too strong for her to let him go just like that. Then, Benjamin would admit the truth, and Elaine’s love for him would overcome the pain of knowing the truth. But the director had a different point of view, because he didn’t cover up any flaws that Benjamin had till the end. The ending by the director was more realistic because Elaine started hating him after knowing the truth, which would be the most probable outcome. She had moved on but since his persistence proved his love, she was eventually convinced that he was the one she loves after all. He remained self-centered till the end, but revealed to be more righteous in the end. He radically grew by experiencing lust for the mother, and finally experiencing great love for the daughter. His experiences helped him distinguish the two and finding his real identity. The director tries to show that no matter how unethical Ben acted, he was still a good guy, and his actions were the result of his environment. Two issues were raised in the movie, namely; his affair with Mrs. Robinson and fighting for Elaine. The first issue, without doubt, is certainly immoral since it was bound to hurt everyone concerned, Ben’s parents, Elaine, Mr. Robinson, and the others that admired Ben. It was an act of lust and deception. It shattered the sanctity of Mr. and Mrs. Robinson’s marriage, their trust for each other, their love, and their family. And it also ruined his own reputation, knowing his parents look up to him. It is deemed to be a social scandal that it brought upon humiliation for both parents. The second issue wasn’t at all intentional. It was an accidental event. It just so happens that the girl she fell in love with was the daughter of his lover. I didn’t see anything wrong, idealistic as it may sound, for him to fight for what he thinks is right, to fight for his love. Both of them didn’t want to be in their situation, but they chose each other among anybody else, which I think is justifiable. No one can dictate another’s happiness.
