...d the state of Oklahoma. Lots of them died in the internment camps, on the way to Oklahoma, and after arriving because of things that took place during the journey. In Indian Territory, the Cherokee built a democratic form of governor, churches, schools, newspapers and businesses. A new constitution was made in September 1839. In 1844 the Cherokee Advocate came about, printed in Cherokee and English. It was the first newspaper in Indian Territory, and the first in a Native American language. They also made one hundred and forty four elementary schools and two higher education institutes. On February 10th, 1990, the Cherokee Nation approved a tax code, which included a tobacco tax and sales tax on goods sold or exchanged on tribal land. This tax’s purpose is to provide government services to Cherokee people and advance economic development, self-sufficiency and a strong tribal government. Migration from the original Cherokee Nation began in the early 1800’s. When gold was discovered in Georgia, and immediately after the Cherokee Nation constitution was passed, and the making of a Cherokee Supreme Court, white communities turned on their Cherokee neighbors and the U.S. government decided that the Cherokees had to leave their farms, their land, and their homes behind. The removal of Native People was not wanting for effective opposition. Senators Daniel Webster and Henry Clay spoke against the moving.
