...iness environment. I think that the setting of Hollywood following a world war was Waugh’s way of adding irony from the beginning. This was supposed to be a happy place, even following a war, but it brought light to the darker industry. One of my favorite characters was Mr. Joyboy, probably because he was malicious from the beginning. He saw something that he wanted and would not quit. When he put smiles on the corpses’ faces to show how he was feeling, I found it to be humorous and adorable (but in a very odd way.) I was rooting for him to win Aimee’s heart. The ending, I thought, was a little extreme, but so true. It shows the despair that people feel when they have no other options, or so they do not think they do. The suicide was another way to portray irony. The suicide of Barlow’s uncle was a good way to begin the love triangle. Of course, his death was the result of him losing his job, as well. I think the main purpose of reading this book for this class is because there are some industries that are less thought of, even though they do exist. The humor ...
