INTERMISSION • Peter llyich Tchaikovsky Dumka (Russian Rustic Scene), Op. 59 (1886) [1840-1893] • Sergei Prokofiev Piano Sonata in B-flat Major, Op. 83 (1939-42) Yefim Bronfamn was born in Tashkent, in the Soviet Union, on April 10, 1958. He immigrated to Israel with his family in 1973, and made his international debut two years later with the Montreal Symphony. He studied in Israel at the Rubin Academy of Music at Tel Aviv University, and in the United States at Marlboro, the Juilliard School, and the Curtis Institute. He has performed with the London and Chicago Symphonies, the Philadelphia and Cleveland Orchestras, and the Israel, Vienna, Berlin, and London Philharmonics. He has even collaborated with our class’s favorite person, Yo- Yo Ma. Bronfman is widely regarded as one of the most talented virtuoso pianists performing today. His commanding techniques have won him consistent critical acclaim and enthusiastic audiences worldwide, whether for his solo recitals, his prestigious orchestral engagements or his rapidly growing catalogue of recordings. He won a Grammy award in 1997 for his recording of the three Bartok Piano Concertos with Esa-Pekka Salonen and the Los Angeles Philharmonic. Bronfman became an American citizen in July 1989. The recital was terrific, although you could hear yourself chew gum even with the music. It was a small turn out, only about one hundred to one hundred and fifty people.
