... time civillians. The Chief of police is Charles H. Ramsey. He has been the chief of police since April 21, 1998. Ramsey started his career when he was eighteen as a cadet for the Chicago police Department. He served there for over three decades. While working in Chicago he served as Commander of Patrol, detectives and narcotics units. In 1994 he was named deputy superitendant of the breau of staff services. Ramsey is a graduate of Lewis University where he received both a Flores 3 bachelors and masters degree in the field of Criminal Justice. Some of Ramsey’s honors include: the Gary P. Hayes award, the Robert Lamb Huminatarian award, the Civil Rights award, and the John Carroll Society Medal. The basic applicant requirements are the same for all police departments. You must have a high school diploma and have at least completed 60 college credits at the time you apply. Unless you have prior military experience you may be able to ovelook certain education requirements. Your eyes must be 20/100 correctable to 20/30. you must also be a U.S citizen and a resident of the District of Columbia. If you are interested in joining there cadet program you must be between the age of seventeen and twenty. Your birthday may not fall past December 31st of that year. You must also have a high school diploma or GED. When you apply you will be asked to do a number of things. Frist you must fill out the application. Thereafter you must pass a written test that tests ones ability’s to learn and perform on the job. A study book is sent to all people scheduled to take the exam thirty days prior to there test date. Flores 4 That is then fallowed by a background check that checks from driving history to arrest history. All applicants must also submit to a lie detector test. After all that is completed you must then pass a psychological examination aswell as a drug screening test. After you pass all of the tests you are thrown into the police academy. The academy lasts twenty four weeks. Recruits live on the academy grounds for the first month and may leave during the weekends.
