...nd Utnapishtim, a man said to have entered the assembly of gods. When he found Utapishtim, Gilgamesh was asked to prove himself worthy of eternal life. Knowing that he would fail, Utapishtim tested Gilgamesh by requiring him to go seven days without rest. Of course Gilgamesh was unable to accomplish this impossible task. He then knew what the gods already knew, that his fate would be to die just as his friend Enkidu. The gods granted the two men immortal powers to make them feel godlike just to show them, for the gods’ amusement, that men are mortals and are there to entertain the gods. In “The Orestia”, the gods once again showed that man’s purpose is to entertain them. The gods told Agamemnon that they would send a storm to destroy his fleet if he did not sacrifice a virgin. Agamemnon, knowing his fleet would be no match for a storm from the gods, and not wanting all of his men to die, decided to offer his daughter to the gods. After sacrificing his daughter to save the lives of his men and himself, he returns home. The gods had already come to Clyemnestra, Agamemnon’s wife, and told her of her husband’s decision to kill their daughter. They then order her to avenge her daughter’s death, and kill Agamemnon. After Clyemnestra kills Agamemnon, in continuance of the law of vengeance, Oretes, son of Agamemnon and Clyemnestra, then avenges his father’s death, and kills his mother. Orestes had violated the most sacred blood relationship by killing his mother. There was then no one left alive to avenge Clyemnestra’s murder. The Furies intervene and decide the fate of Oretes. Zeus, seeing that they gods had caused the entire drama, interrupts before the Furies could sentence Oretes for his crime. Zeus had declared it law to avenge a person’s death. He then changed his ruling and ended the law of vengeance thus setting Oretes free. Showing that he is a protector of man. Finally in Genesis, we see a god that is never changing.
