Therefore the characters of lesser importance in the play distinguish how respected of a man Horatio is. There is a certain kind of relationship that Horatio has with Hamlet, that also distinguishes the amount of respect given to Horatio, “Sir, my good friend, I’ll change that name with you/ and what make you from Wittenberg, Horatio...” (1.2. 163-164). Hamlet reveals that he already had a past liking to Horatio, which foreshadows the type of character that Horatio will be to Hamlet and also then amongst others in the play. As the play furthers into the plot Hamlet continues to confine in Horatio, who is consistently devoted to him and respected for the man that he is. As the play progresses, Horatio never loses touch as being a character that withhold the value of truth. He is a person in the play that does not deny truth at any cost and therefore others are able to take his word. Shakespeare immediately established Horatio where he acknowledges truth from when he comes where he comes to term with the ghost “Most like. It harrows me with fear and wonder” (1.1.43). He does not try to refute what he sees but instead Horatio proves that he will not deney the truth, even to such extreme circumstances. In effect Horatio is viewed as a valid character that remain constant with being true to what he believes. Horatio is also seen as a character that tries to do tell others what he thinks is good or the best thing to do in certain situations. Many times he is confronted with encounters with Hamlet where he tries to warn him against certain actions such as going to speak to the apparition by himself, “What if it tempt you toward the flood, my lord, Or to the dreadful summit of the cliff…” (1.4.69-70) Horatio tied to stop Hamlet from listening to an unpredictable apparition because he knew that it was not best for Hamlet and distinguishes his character to be consistent in what he feels is the true way. Horatio was also confronted with a similar decision when he tried to stop Hamlet to fight “You will lose this wager, my lord” (5.2.177) Horatio has a keen instinct in what action should be done and he would even go against many others to try to give Hamlet and other a sense of what is the true way to act. Horatio uses his instinct to stress out the truth in meaning and in action throughout multiple situations and quite often he is correct. Horatio, throughout the play in many different ways seems to act like a devoted servant and friend to Hamlets. As well because of his frame of mind he progresses the story by being able to know what to do next throughout many situations. When he is confronted by the Ghost he immediately knows what to do and as a result directs the play through his actions. break we our watch up, and by my advice/ Let us impart what we have seen tonight/ Unto young Hamlet, for upon my life/This spirit, dumb to us, will speak to him (1.2.167-170). The significance of his character is revealed when he believes that Hamlet should be consulted and therefore parts of the play become dependent on Horatio. The only person that is consistently at Hamlet’s side when he is in need is Horatio. He is able to give Hamlet advice when needed, but most importantly he is the persons that Hamlet confronts because he knows that Horatio will be reliable executed tasks that are of most importance to him.
