Great Expectations Setting
...dle class not only has to do with your salary but also with the prestige of your occupation. The middle-middle class was the line between being in the lower or upper middle class because most of the people in this class drifted to one class or the other. Those with occupations that require no real skill are a part of the lower-middle class. Lower-class citizens consist of those who are in homeless and illiterate. Social classes in the Industrial Revolution and the Information Revolution are very different. Another difference between the Victorian England and our current time is education. Some types of schools that were offered to children in Victorian England were ragged schools, dame schools, and public schools. Ragged schools were educational institutions where the students were very poor and wore rags, hence the name ragged school. Dame schools were described by Dickens in chapter seven of Great Expectations writing, "Mr. Wopsle's great-aunt kept an evening-school in the village; that is to say, she was a ridiculous old woman of limited means and unlimited infirmity, who used to go to sleep from six to seven every evening, in the society of youth who paid two pence per week each, for the improving opportunity of seeing her do it." The homeschooling movement is a growing phenomenon. Parents all over the country are bringing their children home from both public and private schools in order to educate them at home. Although many people still don’t understand homeschooling the movement is growing because many homeschooled students are now entering college and are proving themselves to be intelligent and diligent students who do well in college. Military schools in the United States are available for students interested in the armed forces. Sometimes parents enroll their children because they believe the student needs the strict discipline and structure of this type of schooling. Military schools are similar to boarding schools where students live on the campus.
