DBQ New England V.S. Chesapeake Bay.

New England settlers also formed tightly knit communities were everyone tried to work together as one. “We must be knit together in this work as one man…..entertain each other with brotherly affection…..if we fail….we shall open the ways of enemies to speak evil of the ways of God..” (Passage from John Winthrop’s A Model of Christian Charity) However, in Chesapeake Bay a different brand of settlers moved in. Merchants, gold seekers, entrepreneurs, businessmen came from all over Europe, mostly England, wanting to make a fortune. According to John Smith, there was no unity among the men and all they think about was how to make gold. As a result, Chesapeake colony had a bumpy start; it loose hundreds of men in the first year and almost became a failed colony if the supply ship from England had not come. Economic differences between the two regions were also a reason why the two evolve separately. Chesapeake Bay mostly relied to tobacco and rice as its staple crop, this required hard labor and the use of slaves from Africa. New England economy was first based on tobacco but it switches to fur trade and ship making industry therefore the need for slaves was not that extensive as those in Chesapeake Bay. The economy of the two would play a key role in later event that would shape American History.
