A UAW member recieves the first employer-paid health insurance plan for industrial workers. Health benefits include a traditional Blue Cross Blue Shield insurance option. The plan does not pay for doctor visits( although tests and laboratory costs associated with the visit may be covered.) Surgical and hospital services are fully covered . A member may also select HMO or PPO health care options, which require less out-of- pocket expenses but limit the choice care health providers. HMO's copay for doctor visits ranges from $0 to $10; PPO plans require a 30 percent to 50 percent copay for office visits. Covered services for active and retired members include hospital, surgical and medical services; prescription drugs; dental care; vision care, and hearing aids. Most of the men in my family worked for the UAW. My father worked at the GM plant in Terrytown, Ny for 10 years. While he worked there, he benefited greatly because he was able to have great vacation time, health care benefits and he earned pretty good money. My uncles on both sides of my parents worked for the UAW. My uncle that lives in California was able to buy a house and do many other things because of the UAW. My family has benefited greatly from the UAW. I don't know where we would be without them. When the recent tsunami happened in Asia, the UAW was right there to help out has many people as they possibly could. Members arranged a 50/50 raffle and called on local Thai restaurants, which donated food for a benefit lunch at the Saturn Plant in Spring Hill, Tennessee. When it was all over the UAW donated thousands of dollars to the people of Asia. One of the UAW members raised about $1,000 to help one of the Asian men to get back on his feet again.
