Clockwork Orange
...e reformed or changed. Without the last chapter in the book, we will not think that Alex has changed. Kubrick’s theme of the movie is absolutely good, evil exists in the world, and it is possible for a man to be pure evil. Chapter 20 ends with Alex saying, “I was cured all right”. When the governor visited Alex in the hospital, Alex was brainwashed by a job promise him and good compensation for what had happened to him. At the end of the movie, Alex was dreaming of the life he had before, and there was no indication that Alex would change from the evil life it appears he would soon resume. Kubrick created an impression that Alex has no free will or moral choice and Alex is evil and he has no ability to change. The plot still valid today. You brake the law you go to jail or mental institution. In the twenty first chapter, the writer shows this change, and the chapter is important because it includes Alex’s mature assessment of his own adolescence and shows the importance of maturity to moral freedom which is Burgess’s main point. Burgess wants to show and prove in his book the definition of moral freedom as the ability to perform both good and evil. The omission of the twenty first chapter resulted in the reduction of the novel from fiction to fable, something untrue to life. Burgess wants to show that human can change. The twenty first chapter was cut because American publishers did not like how Alex was “cured” by turning 21. The novella would be an inspiration to our young generation today, if the last chapter-hadn’t been cut. There are hopes and new life for people who get out of jail and are given a chance to change. Nevertheless the movie showed the world could be a weird and horrible place when Alex who goes around torturing people and being a wicked person who does not have to pay for what he does. There is only one thing in the movie I can say is not accurate compared to the book. In the first chapter of the book, Alex and his friends, were dressed up in black tights. In the movie, Alex and his friends were all dressed up in white tights. A Clockwork Orange is a science fiction but it is based on our society problems and is very different. The plot is very disturbing. It is a story of a young man whose enjoyment is raping woman, ultra violence but who at the same time is fond of Beethoven music. The film takes place in futuristic London where crime runs rampant on the street. The locations for the film are the family home, a bar, prison, medical center, and hospital, as well as the houses of the victims. They are all very simple and uncluttered. The setting is cultural, the clothes, furniture, buildings and music, and it is a frightful depiction of what our society could become and, possibly what it already is, I think the music is fit for the movies, it is very relaxing and sophisticated at the same time. The setting is visual interpretation of what the future society will look like. Kubrick gave me a different view of how The Clockwork Orange society would look. The setting is in the future, because Alex says he is driving a classic Durango 1999. While reading the story, I had a mental image of the decaying neighborhood because of the things that was going on in Alex’s neighborhood. In the movie, Kubrick used a lot of black and white, to create a different mood. One of many things I noticed is the make up. Alex and his gang wear make up when they go out. It gives them all a look of insanity and makes them look disturbed. I think that this was done because it creates a feeling of fear. Secondly, Alex’s mother wears mini skirts, knee high, colored wigs, leather, and heavy-make - up. She has a 60’s look. Kubrick also used a special language. Many words have no real meaning, but viewers still understand what they mean. The context words are very much like used in the book. The movie is very grim of the future. It is trying to say that not every cure is a good one. Anyone ...
