Drugs Stand to Ruin America if Legalized!
...esire to fill that craving. People would continue to commit crimes primarily to fuel his/her addiction. Making drugs legal would ultimately just be a way to subsidize their habit. Crimes are not linked directly to drugs. As a study has shown, people who commit crimes of any kind generally committed the crime before they have ever touched a drug. This helps prove that people will continue to commit illegal acts regardless of whether or not drugs are involved. Drugs should not be legalized because it would jeopardize our sense of self awareness and cultural values. Drug use of any kind destroys human character. It also destroys our dignity, it diminishes the sense of responsibility, it hurts ones productivity, and it makes a mockery of virtue. Drugs do not hurt only the individuals using them, but also their parents, they destroy families, and helps ruin friendships(Bennett 615-616). The legalizing of drugs would help contribute to a society that would consist of many individuals on a regular basis being, “high.” What type of society would we have if you could snort 3 grams of cocaine then go to a public place? This would create more moody people who are not mentally in control of their own actions. It would be chaos. You would lose production in the workplace if employees were not punished for drug use, create more drug-related accidents on the highways and in the air, more school kids on drugs which could lead to an increase in the amount of dropouts, and perhaps more women would use drugs during pregnancy which could lead to more health related issues with babies. These are all issues to be concerned with if drugs are ever to be legalized. Some, on the other hand, argue that we all have rights and these rights are being discriminated against. If you want to poison your body and cause harm to yourself that’s your choice some argue. So, if you want to kill someone should you be allowed to do that too? The government puts these laws and regulations here to protect us. These laws help send a clear message if you want to do drugs you will be punished, which mentally may be enough to stray people away. They understand the dangers and harmful possibilities of legalizing drugs, and you should too! Money, money, and more money! Is that all anyone thinks about now of days? The only real debate for the government over legalizing drugs come from the money to be gained! Some see this as a chance for the government to win the “war on drugs” and profit from it as well too. The government could collect taxes on drugs just like they do with tobacco and alcohol. This may help pay back some of the nations debt, but is not the most ethical way of doing do. If they make the drugs too expensive it will leave room for black market type crimes, and if they make them to cheap there is no profit to be gained in revenue. People who are in favor of legalizing drugs say that costs of having more addicts around would be largely contradicted by the amount of money that the government could collect from taxes to treat them. The higher the price the more likely an addict would be to turn to crime in order to obtain the drug, and tax-free lower cost drug organizations for a better price. If the cost was to low to combat the black market you would have more addicts(Wilson627). They overlook the fact of how the drug network actually works. The majority of the people who sell these drugs do so to carry on their own habits and make a little money on the side. They also don’t realize what t...
