...g. Everybody was forced to believe and follow the rules of the church, and no one could go against the set rules of belief. Everything was clearly bad or good; from the devil or from god. In return, nobody could act out their negative feelings, and the negativity and contempt that was felt would build up and remain. The girls were acting of bad nature by dancing and being young and silly. They were caught, and blamed it on other people by becoming hysterical. At the end of Act One, Abigail and Betty were hysterically calling out the names of women they said to have been communing with the devil.
