She shows some coldness toward him yet, seven months later Proctor states; “Oh Elizabeth your justice would freeze beer” (194). This shows Elizabeth still doesn’t trust John when he says he has no more feelings for Abigail. It also shows that Elizabeth has not forgiven John yet for his sin. Another negative trait for Proctor is his stubbornness. Elizabeth argues with John about how he needed to go to Salem and tell how the girls were lying. John would not go to the court, though: “I am only wondering how I may prove what she told me Elizabeth. If the girl is a saint now, I think it is not easy to prove she’s fraud and the town gone so silly. She told it to me in a room alone I have no proof.” (193) John does not want to go to Salem in fear that his family will have to pay for his sins. One of the best words to describe Proctor is courage. I believe John showed courage all through this play. I think he showed courage when he was there for his wife while she was sick. I know it took courage when he confessed to the courts that he had an affair with Abigail. It also took tremendous courage when he ripped up his confession at the end of the play knowing he would hang for it. Johns courage is visible when he confesses his adultery in court, he explains the affair with Abigail was: “In the proper place where my beasts are bedded. On the last night of my joy some eight months past. She used to serve me in my house, sir. A man may think God sleeps but God sees everything, I know it now. I beg you, sir, I beg you see her what she is. She thinks to dance on my wife’s grave and well she might, for I thought of her softly. God help me, I lusted and there is a promise in such sweat. But it is a whore’s vengeance, and you must see it, I set myself entirely in your hands.
