There were floods and other disasters that kept Wang away from the fields. When Wang is away from the fields he is away from the good things in his life. He gets into other bad things such as spending all his time at a teahouse and having concubines; but once he gets back to life with the earth there is a big change in him. With his focus on the earth, Wang’s attitude turns to the good and he lives a better life. From a simple farmer, Wang Lung became a very rich and wealthy man. He did this by saving every extra penny of money he earned as a simple farmer. He used this money to buy more and more land so that he could, in turn, become wealthier and wealthier. He understood the great value of his land and never sold any part of it. When Wang overheard his sons talking selling the land, near his death, he cried out to them, trying to convince them otherwise. He truly loves the good earth and all that it can bring. I support with Wang Lung and the theme of this book. The earth is good and we should have great respect for it because it can and will bring good things to us.
