Optional Schooling Speech
...Many people believe that the government should use more money on education to reduce the class size. If we just made schooling optional, after the sixth grade, then less people would go to school, therefore, reducing the number of people in each class. This will help the students get a better education with less distractions and more individual help from their teachers. Optional schooling would reduce the number of discipline problems in the classroom. Students who create problems usually do so because they are forced to go to school and do not want to learn. With fewer problems for the teacher to worry about, they are able to worry more about the students that willingly come to class and want to learn. Some students in school have already made up their mind about what career path they will take in the future. They should be able to take the classes which will help them in that career. They should not be required to take classes that would be completely useless for their desirable career. Optional schooling would let students only take the classes they need and then leave them more time away from school to apply what they have learned. With this they will receive the knowledge they need to have a more successful career and life. With required schooling we are forcing the students to go to school when it may be their last priority. This means that the classes have to be much easier in order to keep a considerable number of kids from failing. This results in a curriculum that is less challenging to the students who are willing to make their education a first priority. If we had optional schooling then the curriculum would be able to be more challenging and teach more to the kids. Optional schooling would increase school funding per student. With less kids and teachers to pay for, the school would have money to purchase better learning equipment.
