Government in The Lord of the Flies

...east best symbolized the fear of the unknown. All the boys were scared of it but have never really come face to face with it; they are just told it's out there. Piggy represented intellect well. He always tried to do what the older people would do back home and his glasses were used to generate fire which was very smart. Salvation was symbolized by the signal fire because it was there only way to be rescued. If there was no fire there was almost no hope. The true human nature is when every human being does their duties instinctively without looking for rewards. No spontaneous work without rewards is possible without people always trying to get something more. The normal human nature is to always desire more, so it would almost be impossible for a true human nature. Especially today with all of the incentives in life it would be very hard to try and get people to do what is needed to be done with out looking for some sort of compensation. The purpose of government is to try to keep order. If everyone follows true human nature and are naturally good a government would not be needed. But most normal humans are not good and would need some type of government to try and keep them inline. If all the boys in the closed environment that the boys lived in were deep down naturally good, Ralph would have never needed to set any rules in the first place. The responsibilities the boys had on the island were very important. Someone always had to be looking after the signal fire, making sure it was giving off a decent amout of light and smoke so they would have a chance at being rescued. Some boys went hunting for food in the woods and in the water. Other boys helped to build shelters to live in. Every citizen on the island though had the responsibility of acting mature and not doing something that would not be acceptable back home. This of course did not happen or there would have never been any problems on the island. The responsibilities the boys had were very necessary because without everyone helping out the society would have never succeeded for as long as it did. Also if the boys did not follow through with keeping the fire lit, their chances for rescue were very slim. Also if food was not found the boys could have also ended up starving to death. The boy's attempt to build an island society is not a success because no one would listen to each other or cooperate. If every boy on the island listened and gave everyone else the respect that they wanted the island could have been run very...
