Descartes also proves that these two substances are in fact very different from each other although they can be closely related in order to survive in the real world. One of the main focuses of this paper was the distinction between that which is divisible (the body) and that which was indivisible (the mind). Descartes believes that this is a ‘real distinction’ because it shows clearly how the two substances are indeed different without questioning, yet at the same time though this shows how the mind and the body need to work together in the physical world. Another reason that Rachels is unclear is that he does not distinguish what the difference is between a regular value and a fundamental value. We discussed how a fundamental value could mean the simplest value of a society such as do not kill or respect others that we base our more complicated values on. This in return would be a bad argument to present to Rachels because it would be in bad form to keep relating everything back to a few set basic values.
