A riders’ equitation should appear in balance with the horse he or she is riding. The basic position of the rider should be that the eyes are up, shoulders are back, toes point out, lower leg is touching the sides of the horse behind the girth, and the rider should sit almost perfectly straight in the saddle. The riders’ hands should be relaxed, in front of the saddle, and slightly above the withers. There should be slight contact with the horse’s mouth at all times. When the horse is in motion, the rider should be extremely straight at the walk, sitting trot, and canter. At the posting trot and hand gallop, the rider should be inclined forward. Also, when at the posting trot, the rider should rise and fall with the outside shoulder. It is required for a rider of hunt seat to wear breeches or jodhpurs with boots. Anyone over the age of thirteen should be inclined to wear tall boots instead of paddock boots. A hunt coat of a conservative color is also a good choice for a hunt seat rider.
