A psychologist would take this student and begin studying his raising, who his parents were, and what kind of people they were, and how all of that contributed to his personality. Sociologists would begin by examining his social structure such as his role & identity in his social life. They might see that as a cause to his actions. A sociologist might look at the school that he attends to see the conforming structure that it inhibits. Psychologists might use him as an example to show other what not to do, & then send him to some sort of mental hospital or have sessions to understand more about why he did it. They most likely would blame his up bringing for his actions. A sociologist on the other hand would say that his social structure was too conforming and he wanted to get out of it, which would mean for him to step out of the box, causing everyone to be uncomfortable and then see his actions as being deviant. This example shows the difference in perspectives of psychologists and sociologists. 2. The first basic reason for conforming is the desire of positive sanctions. The idea behind this is to be accepted. This is a large reason for conforming to our social structures. For us to be looked upon as an equal is a “reward” for conforming. Conforming also allows for stabilization in our lives which could also be considered a “reward” in some ways. Second reason for conformity is fear of negative sanctions. Non-conforming would result in punishment. Such as ridicule or being cast an outsider. Leaving you scared to step outside of the box in fear of being outcast.
