Even after a successful birth, the life expectation of a baby wad very low. SS doctors and their assistants would take away their babies and kill them. In 1943 registered women were allowed to bear children, but the new born babies were then drowned in a tub of water by helpers of the SS. Babies of "Aryan origin" weren't killed. Instead they were registered in the camp card index and got tattoo with a number on their bottom or thigh.due to camp conditions , the babies had nearly no expectation to stay alive. Had a mother been successful in keeping her baby up to two months, she had to give it away, otherwise she would be sent to the gas chambers with her baby. Some blond blue eyed children were sent to be germanized, whereas Jewish children were still killed with the same cruelty. Mothers, suffering from malnutrition, chill and illnesses, often could not prevent that their children were bitten or even killed by rats. Joseph Mengele was a doctor in Aushwitz. His major purpose for his experiments were to see what extent the birth rate could be increased by medically manipulating the birth of twins. He wanted to preserve the desirable features of the Aryan race. He hope to unlock the key to a proliferation of Aryan twins which would result in overtaking the prolific Poles and other Slavs whose birth rate before the war exceeded that of the Germans. He especially liked to experiment on twins. His twins included Jews and gentiles of different ages, including many children who he housed in special quarters with better food, beds and sanitary conditions than the rest of the prison population.
