...orld and Poseidon became the ruler of the sea. Poseidon was depicted as a bearded man holding a trident in his hand and seated in a seashell that was pulled around by sea horses or dolphins(Ben). He lived down at the bottom of the ocean in a palace made up of coral, gems, and gold. Poseidon’s weapon of choice was his trident and when he thrust this trident into the ground it would cause massive earthquakes all around the world. Poseidon was the second most powerful god, following only Zeus. Being that he was the ruler and controller of the sea, he was widely worshiped by sailors. Sailors relied soley on Poseidon for a safe voyage across the sea. However, he was a very moody individual, and his temper would often result to violence. When this happened he would strike the ground with his trident and create earthquakes, shipwrecks, drownings and harsh storms. There are several myths in which the sea god reveals the terrible temper. He often used his powers to inflict fear and punishment on people as a form of revenge. An example is when Poseidon was relentless in his persecution of Odysseus after the hero blinded and humiliated the god’s son, Polyphemus. In contrast, when the god was in a good mood he would create new lands in the water and a calm sea. In addition to Poseidon’s reputation as a fighter, however, he was also a legendary lover(greekmythology.com). In this way Poseidon is very much like his brother Zeus in exerting his power on women.
