His efforts to keep his life private were not nessasary. John should hae accepted who and what he was, a Shipley. By keeping his life privet he drove a wedge between his mother and him. This destroyed the relationship he use to have with his mother as a younger child. It is natural for children to want their independence from their parents. Its a natural and healthy process of adolessense. Although there can be other resons for children keeping there parents in the dark about there lives outside the home. In the novel John discludes his mother from his soical life. As he gets older she doesn't know who any of his friends are. He doesn't bring home his girlfriends either.
