...d be left with few career options with such a limited education. Furthermore, if players had to stay in college for two years, it would give them a chance to work on their basketball skills. Many of the top high school players are used to being bigger, stronger and more talented than the competition they face. This advantage results in many players trying to just dunk the ball on every possession with little regard for teamwork or fundamentals like passing or shooting. Also being the best player on the team can result in having a “me” first attitude that people see today in the NBA. By going to college, these “me” first players would be exposed to the team game that is college in because in college, players are more on an equal footing. Players go from being the best on their high school team and having the ball in their hands a lot of the time to having to learn to pass and share the ball in order to succeed. Coaches would be able to teach many players how to shoot a jump shot or play defense because that is the problem among many young NBA players today in that they can not do the easy things in basketball because they never had to. The biggest reason why players should stay in school for two years is that they will gain valuable playing time. Many players who enter the league right out of high school will end up sitting on the bench and not gaining much playing time. NBA superstars like Jermaine O’Neal, who went straight from high school, did not reach stardom right away. He played less than 10 minutes per game in his four years for the Portland Trailblazers. Game time experienced can only come by playing in real games, not sitting on the bench which is the case for most high schoolers entering the NBA. This is why college is s...
