Assistant coach Eddie Meyers, from George Washington University, stated “Unless he’s behind bars, we’re recruiting him.” After being released, Iverson was recruited by Coach John Thompson at Georgetown University. During that time of his life, Allen needed someone to care about him, a father-figure. Coach Thompson was that someone. Coming out of high school, Iverson was the best basketball player in the country. During Iverson’s freshman year at Georgetown, he played in 30 games, averaged 4.5 assists, and he averaged 20.4 points per game. He was named “Big East Rookie-of-the-Year” and “Big East Defensive Player-of –the-Year”. During Iverson’s sophomore year, he played in 37 games, averaged 4.7 assists, and he averaged 25 points per game. In the summer of Allen’s sophomore year, he played in different summer camps with host NBA players. He averaged close to 50 points per game, and scored 70 points 3 times. That year Iverson went to the NBA. He didn’t want to, but a sudden change of plans occurred. His sister, Liesha, became seriously ill, and his daughter Tiaura was born. So now with medical bill his family couldn’t afford, and a child to feed, Iverson was left with one choice, to join the NBA.
