The Talented Mr. Ripley
My expectations of a normal crime novel, such as The Talented Mr. Ripley, are that the novel will be structured with the start being the crime followed by the investigations that take place to capture the criminal and finally the end when the crime is solved and the criminal captured. ... Highsmith has chosen to begin with the crime, in this case murder, then continue to the investigations, however Highsmith ends the novel with a series of anticlimaxes where the main character, Tom Ripley, is almost caught in several instances yet always ends up escaping. ... “This raised his total in cheques to one thousand eight hundred and sixty three dollars and fourteen cents, he calculated in his head”, this quote told me that Tom was very talented with numbers and was very quick witted and on the ball. ... This again displays Tom’s talents to me and again I can only see that he is incredibly talented at what he does and that is something that I admire in a person.
