... for a yes even if it were a no. Teddy’s main goal, I believe; was to shape the government into the strong one that it has become today. Although I learned Teddy was out for the people of America, he was praised for his many accomplishments and still is today. Theodore was so successful that people wanted to laugh his laugh and dream his dreams. He was the role model of the early 1920’s and probably more ideal than ‘Michael Jordan’ is today. In 1902, Teddy settled a long coal strike on terms that weren’t easy for him but he fought and pleaded with congress in order to allow the worker’s to get what they longed for. Teddy made it possible for the workers to have safer working conditions, a fair amount of hours and most important, a fair raise in their pay. This astonishing settlement made Teddy even more adored by Americans and by the time his second term came around, he won by a landslide. The win wasn’t a shock to any American because the economy was close to it’s peak and life was getting a lot better for the majority of American’s. Although he was in politics and the president of the United States, he was also “A bounderous journeyman out seeking adventure”. (David Grubin) Teddy led a long hard fight for the conservation of natural resources and won. He brought this personal concern to congresses attention on December 3rd, 1907 at his seventh annual speech. He was concerned with the threatened waterways and he said “The unlawful fencing of public lands for private grazing must be stopped, but the necessity, which occasioned it, must be provided for”. (Theodore Roosevelt) I think he thought that the conservation of our American land was the wealth of this country. Teddy was a tremendous; compelling preacher of good government and an extremely responsible citizen because he took care of America like a loving, caring mother would a child. Fortunately for Teddy, the fifteen years of public service and his many accomplishments in local, state and federal positions allowed him to be extremely prepared in solving the problems that faced the nation at the time. I feel as well as Chessman that Teddy’s most valuable experience prior to becoming president was probably being the government of New York. I feel that the position pushed Teddy in longing for an honest government and also helped him believe that he should represent everyone as a whole including white collared workers, businessman, farmers and also laborers. I discovered that Teddy wasn’t discriminative towards anyone. In 1910, Teddy declared that he stood for the ‘Square Deal’ and also that he was for the welfare of the American people. Teddy wanted to re-establish competition for the consumers but also for the smaller businesses of America. Teddy really didn’t care about the size of corporations but wanted to get strict regulations on all businesses so that there were no more monopolies. Teddy also came up with another outstanding plan to limit monopolies and in doing this he became a ‘trustbuster’. He would strike without warning and this is proven when he ‘busted’ the monopoly of J.P Morgan’s oil industry. Teddy had always been able to keep order and even when congress refused to do what he asked, Teddy’s great energy and straightforward speeches allowed him to succeed. At the end of Teddy’s second term, although he co...
