Firstly, one’s pride can be seen in a very noble way, as their sense of dignity, integrity, values and self respect. The other common use of the word is used to describe someone’s arrogance, haughtiness, and very high opinion of themself. Initially it is hard to discern which way Reverend Hale was using the word, especially because he used it in conjunction with the word “vanity”. This could lead one to believe that he was using the word pride in the more negative sense, because the kind of pride associated with arrogance and haughtiness is also associated with vanity. To be vain is to be excessively concerned with one’s appearance and accomplishments, to have a high opinion of ones own worth. As Hale goes on to speak of Proctor he says “What profit him to bleed?
