Goody Nurse represents all that is good to Proctor, making telling the lie of the confession even more excruciating. The weight on his conscience is becoming heavier and heavier. Danforth then begins to question Proctor on who he had seen with the devil. Proctor refuses to sight any names saying that “They think to go like saints. I like not to spoil their names”. Proctor’s sense of rightiousness and pride seems to be growing more and more at this point. The more that Danforth persists the more he realizes that what he is doing goes against what he stands for as a person. “I am John Proctor! You will not use me!” he says. Proctor refuses to have his name displayed in public as a witch. This is what Hale mistakes for vanity. Proctor is not vain, he simply cannot willingly give up his last shred of dignity and self respect. The adultery he had committed had already eaten away nearly all self respect he once had, he could not allow for this lie to linger in his ever-present conscience as well.
