Dreams can be thought of in many different ways. They can be thought of the ones that come at night, or a dream could be thought of as a fantasy that is within reach. Another type of dream is considered to be the main theme of this story. Each member of the Younger family is driven by dreams. Mama longs to have her own home away from South Chicago, because she does not want her grandchildren to live in poverty. Beneatha’s dreams are getting a good education, becoming a doctor and marrying a nice family man. Walter wants to have a successful business. This dream has more of a deeper sense and it plays a bigger role in the life of the family. Dreams are important because they can create goals and they can also motivate people to accomplish them. In the play, A Raisin in the Sun, the family and the individual members have dreams that they strive to reach. Walter has a dream to become a successful businessman and to make his family happy. He wanted his wife be comfortable and for his son to have the choice to go to any college that he desired. The difficult part for him is to accomplish his dreams. This was a hardship because he had many conflicts with him and his family. For Walter Lee to let go of his idea of the liquor store, and becoming a wealthy businessman was not a easy task. He seemed to always pressure his family into accepting his ideas. He wanted to do something more productive so that he could support him and his family. What happens to a dream deferred? The “dream” is a goal in life, not only to the dreamer but the dreamer’s life. But what is a dream exactly? The dream of life goal of a human usually is what makes them a valuable member of society but the famous poet Langston Hughes also answers this question.
