You served your country not only because it was highly socially unacceptable not to but because it was an honour and every man and his dog wanted to be able to stand proud and be able to say “I fought for the freedom of this country”
However this is old fashioned ideological thinking and it is not the thinking the we are encouraged to believe today, and this is definitely not the response to war that the novel chain of hearts encourages.
