...rity started fights, vandalized the school, and heckled many people. On top of that, they never won any games. They were altogether worthless. My senior year I had a class where I had the opportunity to sit by a hockey player named Mike. I wasn’t to happy about it cause he was known to be quite the jerk. Which he truly was. However, throughout the course of the class he and I learned a lot about each other and my opinion completely changed about him. I had totalized him as a hockey player and that was it. Mike even enjoyed things like the Ballet. I would have never expected that from a guy like him. Anyways, the point is that I can see why it is so easy to totalize a person. I find totalizing helpful when it comes to going to a place for the first time where I didn’t know anybody. It would be very easy for me to break the ice with these people by talking to them about what already know about them. In Mike’s case, it was talking to him about hockey. However I would really need to work on moving this new relationship along to different horizons of discussion in order to not totalize the person.
