Muhammad

... Although Armstrong gets her points across well, some of them might be offending to other people. She praises the Islamic religion all through the book when she is an ex-nun. Many people feel a strong hate towards the Muslims and the Islamic people, especially after the events of September 11th. She states in her book that Usama Bin Laden, the head of the September 11th attacks, followed a fundamentalist ideology based on Muhammad’s prophecies (pg. 4). Many people felt a strong hatred towards Muslims after the attacks, and she sticks up for Islam by saying that the carnage committed in Muhammad’s name was a mistake because he spent his life trying to stop unneeded massacres (pg. 5). By sticking with the Muslims, she made a lot of people angry in her home country of Britain and in the United States. By praising the Islamic religion so highly, she causes a lot of controversy and people to turn their backs on her. Another point a lot of people might find controversial is that she compares Muhammad to Jesus numerous times in the book. She says the Christian religion is based on the image of Jesus on the crucifix. Religious leaders tend to achieve their recognition by not succeeding and being disrespected, not by the terms of everyday law (pg. 164). She is saying that religious leaders gain fame by being walked all over and humiliated by superiors, but they would not gain fame for sacrificing himself for his people. This is not a true statement because Jesus being crucified is not the reason he gained recognition, him on the cross is just a symbol of the sacrifice he made for his people. Him being crucified is not why he has such success. Also, she says the Jesus was born in a time of peace whereas Muhammad was born into the blood shed of Arabia (pg. 165). This is implying that Muhammad had nothing to establish his thoughts on because their was no control in the country. Whereas Jesus was born into a country with the political and social views already established. It would not matter what the political and social views are anyway because they each started their own respected religions. A third point that could be argued about is that she portrays Muhammad has the perfect man. Armstrong states that Muhammad is the symbol of a perfect man (pg. 262). Do not get it wrong, he is a great man, but he has committed many actions that could be frowned upon. Many people, as Armstrong says, portray Muhammad as a violent man, willing to use his sword to make people believe in his religion (pg...
