...s would not have done away with it. It does not deter people from committing crimes, plain and simple. Texas, being one of the few states that instate the death penalty, has a higher crime rate than any other state in the country. Bandinter did not take into account the size and population of Texas but the point was made clear. Bandinter goes on to say that the death penalty actually brings racism, social injustice, and economic and social inequality. He believes African-Americans and Hispanics are most at risk due to the connotation of society, which makes them automatic suspects. They make up the majority of people that wait on death row simply because they were not given the same chance of those more fortunate who can afford more competent attorneys. Bandinter also states that juvenile murderers do not have the same capacity as adults, to really be aware of the consequences. He blames parents for the actions of underage murderers. He asks the question, “Where does America stand? Among democrats who have banned the death penalty or alongside totalitarian China and Fanatical Iran?” It was decided today by the supreme court that juvenile death sentences are unconstitutional, but I agree with Bandinter for the most part. The death penalty does not stop people from committing murders. It also does not pose as a justifiable means to an incorrect action. Just because one unnecessary death occurs does not warrant another one. People who are pro-capital punishment would have you believe that the example of “don’t kill or we’ll kill you” is enough to stop people from committing murder because of the awareness of the consequence.
