...n France Jews. In both countries people were being brutally murdered because of their skin colour or religion and in both countries the government or leader was very wrong. Although now things are not even nearly as close to as bad as things were in those days but people are still being discriminated against. For example if you are a black female in South Africa with little qualifications you are more likely to get a job than a white male even if the man does have better qualifications. The themes of the play are: · Religious laws vs. man made laws Religious laws refer to the belief that a body has to be buried or the spirit of the person will roam the earth for eternity and man made laws referring to the fact that Creon made a law that Polynices was not to be buried which contradicts their belief but because government or monarchy was/is stronger than religion the law had to be obeyed. · Personal freedom vs. Society This is portrayed when Antigone goes against the law and goes to burry her brother. Antigone’s actions representing personal freedom (what one person is free/wants to do) and the law representing society (what is good for everyone and what everyone wants to do) · Conflict (Family and hierarchy) This conflict is between Creon and Antigone. Because they are family Creon finds it hard to be a king with her and rule like he normally would with any other person. The Characters in this play are Antigone, Nurse, Ismene (Antigones sister), Haemon (Creons son and the love of Antigone), Creon (Antigones uncle and King), Eurydice (Queen), Eteocles (Antigones brother, the one who got buried), Polynices (Antigones other brother, the one who didn’t get buried), Oedipus (Antigones father who was king but died).
