Less accidents and fatalities will occur if the dangerous drivers are taken from the road. The first place to start should be the elderly. Accidents like the one in Santa Monica ,Ca. ( An 86 year old man confused the gas peddle with the break peddle and plowed into a farmers market killing ten and injuring a dozen.) is a perfect example of why screening should be considered through out the United States. “The problem comes in determining which drivers pose most risk.”(CBS News 1) Even though some elderly drivers are taking it upon them selves to stop driving it is not enough. “ In the next 30 years the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety projects the number of seniors in car crashes/ accidents will jump from just under 800,000 to 2.2 million with more than 15,000 elderly drivers getting killed each year.” (CBS News 1) Most elderly drivers spend less time on the road then they use to because they have less places they have to go. “There is a large number of individual and public services that will pick up elderly/ disabled from there homes” (On the Road- Elderly Drivers, Elizabeth Vierck) If screening was enabled for the elderly and they did not pass there are so many other options. This screening is not to discriminate against the elderly; it is to protect all motorists including elderly. The older a person is the more likely they are to have complications when getting hurt in any kind of accident. Elderly people might feel less independent if they are told they can not drive, but they have to realize that we are only trying to protect the motorists of the nation. If they are fit to drive they will not lose there license; the ones that pose danger will. “I gave up driving this year because my eyes are going. I can’t take the bus because I can’t see the numbers. I won’t take a taxi because they smell of smoke and they coast too much.
