...the crowd, but then he saw Dr. Wyatt also standing. As soon as his dad saw Wyatt, a look of horror and hatred came across his face. The moment Eli’s speech was done, Jon walked out of his son’s graduation. That night when Eli came home, he found the house dark and a note on the counter that said: (pg 57) It’s clear to me that somehow you’ve gotten to know Quincy Wyatt, and that your new job is with Wyatt Transgenics. I don’t want to know that details of how that happened. I don’t care. I simply ask that you not take the job. In fact, I ask you not to let this man be in your life in any way. I can’t tell you why, Ely. But I am begging you to do what I ask, and to do it immediately and without question. Love, Dad Eli went to his dad’s room to ask him about the letter. All his dad would tell him was that he didn’t want him around Wyatt. He wouldn’t say why. So Eli got mad and left. He went out to run. Eli was about 6’ 7” and very good at athletics, he just didn’t enjoy playing sports. He always saw that his teammates made mistakes, but he never did. That drew attention to him, and he didn’t like that. So he didn’t play. The next day, Eli went to his new job at Wyatt Transgenics. He found that he would be caring for the genetically enhanced rabbits that they had there. He would feed them, water them, weigh them at every feeding and once every day, take a sample of each rabbit’s droppings and weigh that too. The part of the rabbits that had been enhanced was the milk that each produced. The rabbits’ genes had been changed so that they produced milk with certain proteins in it. It was just the beginning of the experiments. The idea was to perfect tampering with rabbit genes and move on to bigger animals, until eventually experimentation on humans. Eli knew immediately that he was going to love his job. That weekend Eli went to visit his mother. She was in a special care home. She just sat in her wheelchair and didn’t move, except for the occasional muscle spasm. She didn’t comprehend anything, she didn’t feel anything, she didn’t think anything. She just sat there. That was due to Huntington’s Disease. After visiting his mother, Eli called Dr. Wyatt to see what he was up to. Dr. Wyatt said that he was happy he called and he wanted him to come over because he had someone he wanted Eli to meet. So he went to Wyatt’s house. He stood out front for a moment and someone opened the door and asked if he was going to come in. The person he saw looked to be about 18, but was the most beautiful woman Eli had ever seen. She looked like a supermodel. Eli was speechless. He went in and found Dr. Wyatt inside. They started talking about Wyatt’s new book. Eli found out that the woman’s name was Kayla and that she wasn’t just looks but she was intelligent too. The three of them talked for hours. Eli lost track of time and realized that he had missed his date with Viv that night. He quickly said that he had to go and rushed home. To his horror when he walked in his house, he found Viv there talking with his father. He had not wanted her to meet his father or see his home. He also didn’t want her to know about his mother and HUNTINGTON’S DISEASE. So they got in a fight and ended up breaking up. That weekend, Eli’s mother died. At the funeral, Kayla came and so did Viv. When Eli’s father saw Kayla, he got a very confused look on his face, and Eli couldn’t understand why. When Eli and his father got home, they went down to their apartment’s storage facility where they kept all of the things that Eli’s mother had. There were a lot of containers. Eli and his dad dragged them up to the apartment and started going through them. Eli’s dad found an old picture of his mother when she was about 18 and showed it to Eli. When he saw it he became sick, for staring out of the picture at him was a woman that was his mother, but looked identical to Kayla. He told his dad that he had to leave and he would be back later. He went straight to Dr. Wyatt’s office and confronted him about it. He learned that his mother had come to Dr. Wyatt and told him that she wanted a child, but she didn’t want any chance of the child having HUNTINGTON’S DISEASE. In return Dr. Wyatt only asked for 12 eggs from Eli’s mom. No money, just eggs to experiment on. He learned that Kayla came from one of these eggs. So he and Kayla shared a mother, but not a father. He went home and talked to his dad about it. His dad said that was the reason he did not like Dr. Wyatt, because he had taken those eggs and done weird gene manipulation experiments on them. Eli couldn’t take it anymore. He went to the one place that he felt at peace and calm: work. When he first started his job, he found an elevator that was disguised as an office door, and had decided that it would be best not to ask about it. While at work after finding out about his past, he decided that there must be more secrets down that elevator. He was determined to get down it. Since it was Sunday, there were not many people at work. He made his way carefully to the elevator. He pushed the button and found with surprise that it opened. Inside he found the normal buttons that all the other elevators had. But then he saw that this elevator had one basement that the others didn’t. He tried the button but it didn’t work. He found a key card acceptor next to it, but his card didn’t work. He kept trying, putting the card in any way he could think of. Then he heard a voice behind him that said “This one ought to work… Because I stole it from Quincy this morning.” (pg 211). So Kayla and El...
