...il Perry, Todd Anderson, and Knox Overstreet were all inspired in different ways by a passage by Henry David Thoreau. Neil Perry is a student at Welton who gets exceptional grades and is one of the best. His father has already decided that he will attend Harvard and medical school and will become a doctor. At the beginning of the new semester, he is placed in Mr. Keating’s English class. Mr. Keating has unique teaching methods and tries to show his students that poetry can be fun and not mundane. He tells his class about a secret club that used to meet when he was a student at Welton, the Dead Poets Society. Neil and some of his friends recreate this club and Thoreau’s words are read aloud at the start of each meeting. After the first club meeting, a noticeable change is evident in Neil.
