Without it you will only start out at around $8.00 sometimes a little higher but the degree makes all the difference in the world. And now that I have a daughter its essential that I earn a degree to make life a bit easier for the both of us. According to Essence Magazine Sept, 2003 issue only 27% of Americans have a bachelors degree or higher, according to the latest census figures, so college graduates enjoy an automatic leg up over three quarters of the competition for any job. Earnings also increase with educational attainment. Some statistics: Estimated lifetime earnings of full-time, year-round women workers(Essence Magazine Sept,2003 p.8). Graduates keep their job during a recession more often too (Detroit Free Press, via Knight-Ridder/Tribune Business News Dec,2002). Unemployment is at an all time high and employees are basically being robbing of their benefits. Without a degree or some sort of certificate finding a job is almost impossible. Education was always important in our home growing up. We were taught that our education would get anywhere we wanted to go. My father a skill tradesmen and my mother a nurse always wanted their children to further their education so that we wouldn’t have to work as hard as they did to make ends meet. My father’s parents were farmers in Mississippi and had a strong desire for my six uncles and aunts to attend school beyond general education. None of my fathers siblings including him even received an associates nor bachelors degree. When it came to his children he stressed the value of education. He stated that people can take a lot from you, but never your education. A degree beyond high school would place us in a different social and economical class compared to someone with just a high school diploma or GED.
