He is caught in between life, or eternal life with God, and death, or life on earth with the saving grace of God. Jesus assures Nicodemus that he who believes in the Son of God will live in the light. Therefore, Jesus repressors the love that promises future bliss, the love that is hopeful of future reward, forward looking to future ratification (Kreeft 108). Nicodemus learned through Jesus’ redirection that Jesus’ love is the promise of Nicodemus’ future happiness with with God in heaven. Another prime example of love throughout the Gospel of John is sequence six. In sequence six, the story of the Samaritan Woman is told. Jesus helps this woman to accept salvation. Kreeft’s twenty-third characteristic of love is that love is ready. When the Samaritan woman went the the well during the middle of the day, she was not expecting anything out of the ordinary. When Jesus showed up and told her to accept the living water, she was hesitant. But tomorrow never comes, and if we do not turn, for today is the only time there ever is. “Now is the time of salvation” (Kreeft 135). The woman listens to Jesus and believes. For that is what salvation is: receiving God into our soul, our will, in the living present (Kreeft 135). Jesus saw something special in the Samaritan woman. The living God does not enter into anything dead (Kreeft 135). In the story of Lazarus, we see Love Being as Strong as Death, Kreeft’s final characteristic of love, number twenty-six.
