What caused slavery
... I feel paved the way for white men to think that they could force Africans into slavery. Because they were free to do anything they wanted, they could tell people that were under them what to do. The slaves were forced to do whatever the rich white man said. The Bacon’s Rebellion according to Edmund Morgan played a major part in starting the slavery movement. The rebellion made the white men value slaves more that indentured servants because slaves had no expectations for the future. They were to live out their lives in slavery with virtually no hope of every seeing freedom. Indentured servants, on the other hand, had every reason to look towards the future. Their term of service would only last from around five to seven years. So now with this thought in the rich white man’s head they wanted to have more slaves and less indentured because they did not have to worry about losing their free labor. They did not want to have to pay any body for the labor they could get for free. The white men wanted to make money without spending it. And since their color made their status stand out, society could make sure that they were the ones to stay under slavery. And because the Africans were the only ones that were slaves now, the poor whites grew closer together, which really tore down the walls between the poor white and the rich whites. All rich white men wanted more slaves so they went out and found as many Africans as possible, thus strengthens slavery. In the quote adapted from Nathaniel Bacon’s Manifesto Concerning the Present Troubles in Virginia 1676, it is showing that Bacon, a rich white man, is in control of his army made up of servants, slaves and poor Virginians. He leads these people to clear the land of what he calls “robbers and ...
