Probably the biggest for her was the fact that she thought that she could end up in hell for breaking her abstinence. Mainly Abner directly affects the story by causing the family to move from place to place because of his arson problem. He seems to be a bit unstable and if a confrontation arises, usually the confronter will find that his barn has been burned down by crazed Abner.
