Pollution and global warming are inevitable consequences of development.

...n the 1950s at Maralinga lands (Fowler cited in Seidler, 1993, p111). Robinson discovered that the Sulphide Corporation at Cockle Creek, Newcastle, emits sulphur dioxide, lead and other pollutants. The Cockle Creek plant is close to Lake Macquaire and a number of residential suburbs including Boolaroo and Argenton. The smelter of the plant has been a major cause of water and air pollution and of lead contamination (Robinson cited in Seidler, 1993, p87). Rowe talks about the sources of pollution in Queensland. He discovered that one of the main sources of pollution are coal gas plants, as many as 30 operating and they produce carcinogenic tars and aromatics frequently. Timber treatment plants, tanneries and wood scours have also produce hazardous gases into the environment while mining activity and industries such as metal working, electroplating, chemical and paint manufacture, dry cleaning are spreading pollution and problem too (1993, p137). Grant explains about a case where a former timber treatment site, contaminated with a range of treatment chemicals including creosote, copper, chromium and arsenic, was redeveloped for residential use. There was a health risk for some of the residents in that area. He also states about the contaminated sediments in urban waterways which are urgent problems in NSW that caused bans in fishing in the area (Grant cited in Gerard, 1993, p82). Global warming is caused by Carbon dioxide, Chlorofluorocarbons, Methane, Ozone and Nitrous oxide. Amount of them, Carbon dioxide (50%) is the most serious pollutant. It is leaded from burning coal and oil, removal vegetation. Chlorofluorocarbons (20%) is leaded from air conditioners, refrigerators and aerosols. Methane (16%) is leaded from rice growing, animal waste, swamps and landfills. Ozone (8%) is leaded from air pollution. And Nitrous oxide (6%) is leaded from fertilizers and burning coal and oil (Internet, 1999). Amount of these reasons, burning coal and oil is inevitable aspect in industry development. Following the society and technologies development, air condition and fridge more and more become into people’s home, office, business place and school. Meanwhile, Emission level of Chlorofluorocarbons is also become higher. These two development reasons caused air pollution and global warming are more and more seriously. Redman writes about the large number of technologies that have been applied to the remediation of contaminated sites in Australia. Redman argues that those technologies are varies and still undergoing development in conjunction with the profit-making setting and regulatory framework. This is now occurring in Australia but much of this development was seen taking place in the US and Europe (Redman cited in Rowe, 1993, p186). Redman also discusses the range of innovative technologies such as heat treatment that includes incineration to control mostly organic contaminants, cement kilns to lower the use of oxygen levels which assist in limiting the emission of pollutants. Redman introduces the use of technologies such as electro kinetics, irradiation and vitrification that reduce the mobility of pollution (Redman cited in Rowe, 1993, p203). Grant talks about remediation technologies such as bioremediation, chemical oxidation, dechlorination, soil washing, solvent extraction, thermal desorption, vacuum extraction and vitrification. The scientific and technical challenges are huge where development of new technologies will help prevent pollution which are accepted in Australia and suited to local conditions (Grant cited in Gerard C, 1993, p84). Some very damaging pollution is not only caused b...
