ANTIGONE AS A TRAGEDY
...the tragedy. And all the elements can be found within Antigone. First off Antigone is considered to be a being of noble stature. She stands noblest and most heroic among all the characters, defiant of man’s rule and insisting on God’s justice. She is strong willed and developed and possesses complete confidence in her ability to choose and execute a just action. She does not see the full situation through her actions; she is blind to the key elements of the problem. Her silence and her speeches against Creon, are a proof of unshaken courage. To remain tragic, her story depended on a weak and inadequate recognition of her own failing. That’s why we can conclude that Antigone even though courageous, is not perfect. She is stubborn and hard headed and has broken the laws of the king, while fulfilling the laws of the gods. Thus, she knows that her determination and persistence will bring about her a unjustly death. Then there is the point wherein her downfall takes place. And because we know that she knew the consequences of her actions, her death was a result of her own choice and fault. Even though it seems that Antigone is destined to die, due to chance or misfortune Creon comes to her rescue too late. And therefore fate could not and can not be stopped.
